How to navigate using your watch

Navigation using your watch

You can determine a north/ south line by using an analog watch (one with hands). Hold the watch horizontal and point the hour hand at the sun. Bisect the angle between the hour hand and 12 o’clock to get the north south line.

If there is a doubt as to which is north, remember the sun rises in the east and sets in the west and is due south at noon. The sun will be in the east before noon and in the west after noon.

The time must not be adjusted for daylight savings time. If your watch is set on daylight savings time, use the midway point between the hour hand and 1 o’clock.
